Het Actiefonds has been supporting the worldwide fight for a better world since 1968. We supported activists who campaigned against the nuclear energy movement and the squatters of the 80s, we collected radios for resistance movements in El Salvador and Eritrea, we helped ensure that Heineken left Birma, and we campaigned for the rights of undocumented people in the early zeroes. As social movements grow and diversify, we have supported more and more different kinds of projects, varying from actions around anti-racism, feminism, climate activism, the fight for land rights, worker’s rights, and social rights across the world.
Unlike what people sometimes say, George Soros isn’t actually the sponsor of every demo out there, and financial help for activists is hard to come by. In reality, activists move mountains of work without ever earning a penny for it. To ensure it remains possible for regular people to be able to take action, they can request funding from us. This money is only ever used for the costs that come with organising an action, and is never used to pay the activists themselves.
These past few years we’ve been getting more funding requests than ever before, but our resources have remained the same. This means that increasingly we can only fund a part of the requested amount, or cannot help at all. For most of the action groups we reject there are no other options available to them, as almost no other funds support direct actions. Our ‘no’ often has immense consequences.
We strive to have to say ‘no’ less often. But we can only do that in a sustainable way if we increase our funds. This is why we are looking for 1000 new donors.
With those new donors we could help those who push for a better world even more effectively. Together with them we can work towards a world where the power lies with the people, and where everyone can live in freedom, without the planet being destroyed by the process in the meantime.
